Tactic A1.7

Waste Reduction and Prevention

Educate and encourage businesses to implement waste reduction and prevention programs.

This tactic encourages businesses to understand product purchasing from a sustainability standpoint, then benchmarking their current waste levels.

A “waste audit” process could be developed to help businesses track the composition and scale of waste. As new processes and purchasing initiatives are implemented, the businesses can compare progress against their benchmarks. The community can showcase businesses that have made significant progress in reducing waste, and share their techniques.

FY22:

On March 16, the SCC&TB sponsored a community document-shredding event, eliminating 23 64-gallon secure containers; approximately 4,600 lbs. of documents were destroyed in just one hour.  The environmental impact is estimated to be:

     39.1 trees saved
     874 gallons of oil saved
6.9 cubic yards of landfill space saved
     9,200 kilowatts of energy saved
     16,100 gallons of water saved
3,450 lbs. of carbon dioxide pollution eliminated (if documents had been incinerated rather than shredded)

In October 2021, the SCC&TB and Elevated Shredding hosted a free, contactless community shredding event for residents to dispose of old documents and no-longer-needed paperwork in an environmentally appropriate manner. Residents delivered approximately 2,000 lbs. of paper for recycling, saving 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space,4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water.

FY21: In January 2021, the SCC&TB and Elevated Shredding hosted a heavily promoted, free, contactless community shredding event for residents to dispose of old documents and no-longer-needed paperwork in an environmentally appropriate manner. Residents delivered approximately 6,600 lbs. of paper for recycling, saving 49.5 trees, 1,254 gallons of oil, 9.9 cubic yards of landfill space,13.2 kilowatts of energy and 23,100 gallons of water.
In an identical event in September 2020, residents recycled approximately 8,000 lbs. of paper, helping save 60 trees,1,520 gallons of oil, 12 cubic yards of landfill space,16 kilowatts of energy, and 28,000 gallons of water.
In July 2020, in partnership with Mountain Mojo and the City of Sedona, the SCC&TB finalized a Bring Your Own campaign, encouraging people to use reusable mugs, bottles and bags when shopping.
