Tactic A1.5

Water Refilling Stations

Increase the number of water refilling stations in the area.

As visitors reduce their use of disposable water containers, the need for water refilling stations increases. These stations would be developed in high-use areas, making it easy for visitors to embrace.

The stations can incorporate a common brand theme tied to broader promotional Sedona waste-prevention efforts.

PROGRESS TO DATE

Water Refilling Stations

Increase the number of water refilling stations in the area.

FY22:  Water refilling stations are closed from November 1 until the weather is warm enough to prevent freezing; they were closed throughout the most recent quarter (January – March).
In the first five months of FY22 (July-November 2021), the SCC&TB Visitor Center station dispensed the equivalent of 4,536 12 oz. bottles.
As of December 2021, the total number of plastic bottles saved at Sunset Park and Posse Grounds Park (the only stations with dispensing counters) reached 26,770, according to the City of Sedona.

FY21:  Following installation of a station at Posse Grounds Park by the tennis courts, the total number of City-owned stations rose to five.
As of June 2021, the total number of plastic bottles saved at Sunset Park and Posse Grounds Park (the only stations with dispensing counters) reached 21,152 according, to the City of Sedona.
As of November 2020, the total number of plastic bottles saved at Sunset Park and Posse Grounds Park (the only stations with dispensing counters) reached 16,104, according to the City of Sedona. In the first four months of FY21, the Chamber reports the Visitor Center station dispensed the equivalent of 17,042 12 oz. bottles.

FY20: Fiscal Year 20 saw successful first steps for the water refill program.

  • From July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020, the SCC&TB Visitor Center water refill station dispensed 1,400 gallons, the equivalent of 14,937 12 oz. plastic bottles.
  • City of Sedona officials say the equivalent of 10,428 12 oz. plastic bottles were dispensed at the Posse Grounds and Sunset Park stations on City of Sedona property.

The City of Sedona’s totals do not include thousands of bottles saved in the final three months of FY19, when the Posse Grounds and Sunset Park locations were opened and operating.
They also do not include the Community Pool and The Hub stations, which do not have bottle dispensing counters; City of Sedona officials say the numbers are probably comparable to the Posse Grounds and Sunset Park locations.
Five refill stations were operating at the end of FY20:  Community Pool, Posse Grounds Park, The Hub, Sunset Park and the SCC&TB Visitor Center.
The SCC&TB posts all locations on GetAroundSedona.com. and promotes them to the public, travelers and SCC&TB partners in the SCC&TB e-Newsletters and blog.
