Tactic A1.1
Recycling Resources
Deploy wider range of recycling resources/containers in high-visitation areas and create effective branding to enhance utilization.
Surveys show visitors want to be part of a sustainability solution for Sedona. By expanding the number and locations of recycling bins and other resources, Sedona can increase visitor participation in recycling efforts.
Areas with high visitor volumes, whether in developed commercial areas, trailheads, or other natural areas, should be prioritized.
SCC&TB should develop a marketing campaign to brand containers and encourage visitor usage.

Recycling Resources

FY 23: Approximately 99.3 tons of total recyclable material have been collected from four City dropoff sites
FY21: The SCC&TB is continually promoting recycling awareness in conjunction with the Sustainability Alliance. The Recycling Quiz was promoted as a ‘sidebar’ in the Red Rock News in December 2020 and leading up April’s Earth Month, was promoted on SedonaEarthMonth.com and VisitSedonaEarthMonth.com.
It was featured in a news release on Earth Month activities distributed by the SCC&TB April 1. On April 5, it was featured in the SCC&TB partner newsletter, where more than 800 local businesses were encouraged to take and share the quiz.
The quiz was taken 1,186 times from July 1, 2020, to Jan. 27, 2021 for a total of 1,500 total responses since its publication in FY20.
Most quiz takers recognize the benefits of recycling, with 83% choosing the correct answer that recycling assists in conserving natural resources, conserving energy, and reducing air and water pollution.
The SCC&TB is promoting all recycle locations by posting them on the new Green Travel blog and tab https://visitsedona.com/about-us/green-travel/.
From January through July 2021, the SCC&TB is scheduling 14 social media alerts promoting recycling and waste reduction, reaching thousands of Sedonans and visitors.
FY20: The SCC&TB, Sedona Recycles, the City of Sedona and Recycle by City created the one-page printable Recycling Guide and online Recycling Quiz. The quiz is an entertaining way to educate residents about what can and cannot be recycled in Sedona and helps identify where education is needed.
In June, the quiz and guide were the subject of the SCC&TB’s monthly ad in the Red Rock News and Kudos, which included the weblink SedonaRecyclingGuide.com
