Pocket Fire Update Near Sedona
Sedona remains open for business while the Pocket Fire response continues, and visitors are encouraged to stay informed, follow official guidance, and respect all closures and evacuation areas
LATEST INFORMATION: July 9, 2026
As of the National Interagency Fire Center Incident Management Situation Report issued Thursday, July 9 at 7:30 a.m. MDT, the Pocket Fire is listed at 27,449 acres, with 53% containment. The report shows a 68-acre increase, 1,078 personnel assigned, 22 crews, 60 engines, and 9 helicopters. Estimated full containment is listed as July 31.
The fire remains 7 miles north of Sedona on the Coconino National Forest and is being managed by California Interagency Management Team 6. Current fire behavior is described as moderate, with backing, flanking, and uphill runs. Officials continue to note that structures and energy infrastructure remain threatened, and area, road, and trail closures remain in effect.
The most recent local operational update I found before this morning’s national report was from July 8, when officials reported the fire at 27,440 acres, 53% contained, with crews continuing day and night to hold the fire within identified containment lines. That update also noted two lightning strikes near Secret Mountain and continued concern for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty outflow winds.
Closures and safety alerts remain important: State Route 89A remains closed between Sedona and Flagstaff except for residents, and areas around Oak Creek Canyon remain on heightened evacuation awareness. Seven Canyons and Enchantment areas remain in SET status, meaning residents should be ready to leave if conditions worsen.
A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect over the fire area. Please avoid closed roads, trails, recreation sites, and airspace so firefighters, aircraft, crews, and heavy equipment can work safely. If you fly, they can’t.
