'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' from the Royal Shakespeare Company

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s extraordinary production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” makes its Sedona big-screen debut on Sunday, Sept. 21. The Sedona International Film Festival hosts the high-definition premiere of William Shakespeare’s renowned play from its home in Stratford-Upon-Avon. There will be one show at 1 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Simon Godwin makes his Royal Shakespeare Company debut to direct the Bard’s exuberant romantic comedy. He is Associate Director of the Royal Court and his production of “Strange Interlude” recently played to critical acclaim at the National Theatre. This is the first time in 45 years “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” has been performed in full production on the Royal Shakespeare Theatre stage. Valentine and Proteus are best friends, until they fall in love with the same girl. Having travelled to Milan in search of adventure, they both fall for the Duke’s daughter Silvia. But Proteus is already sworn to his sweetheart, Julia, at home in Verona, and the Duke thinks Valentine is not good enough for his Silvia. With friendship forgotten, the rivals’ affections quickly get out of hand as the four young lovers find themselves on a wild chase through the woods, confused by mistaken identity and threatened by fierce outlaws before they find a path to reconciliation. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” features Mark Arends as Proteus and Michael Marcus as Valentine. Mark recently appeared in Headlong’s 1984, and Michael’s credits include playing Henry Tudor in the BBC series The White Queen. Launce is played by Roger Morlidge, who has just finished appearing in the West End transfer of The Full Monty. Critics are raving about this production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”: 'There's a lovely summery feel to Simon Godwin's modern-dress production of this early Shakespeare comedy; it's a stylish and confident RSC debut.' — Evening Standard 'Director Simon Godwin eagerly explores the light and dark sides of romance in a striking RSC debut.' — Guardian 'Simon Godwin's lively, modern-dress staging…remarkably engaging, amusing and disquieting.' — Times 'Winning comic fizz to complement its dark side.' — Daily Telegraph “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona. For more information, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.org.

As Sedona’s Red Rocks Were Being Formed~ A Look at the Permian Period

Our first Sunday Lecture Series will feature Kennard Bork on Sunday, September 21st, 2:00 P.M. Ken is a new resident of Sedona and is an enthusiast of the rich natural history and cultural options of this area. He has long been fascinated with dinosaurs and has a Ph.D. in geology and paleontology. Ken’s focus of research was on the history of geology and decoding Central Ohio’s geology. The world of the Permian Period (300 to 250 million years ago) would look quite alien to a modern observer. Most of the continents were together in a great landmass called Pangea. Reptiles and amphibians were the dominant land vertebrates, because dinosaurs and mammals would not appear for tens of millions of years. Lycopods (of coal-forest fame), conifers, ferns, and seed ferns represented the land flora, long before flowering plants appeared. The young Appalachian Mountains had recently been created by continental collisions, but the birth events of the Rockies, Alps, and Himalayas were far in the future. Sedona sat near the equator as our famous Red Rocks were being formed. The Permian period ended with the greatest extinction event in the history of the planet. This lecture will briefly look at the Earth during that fascinating time. Space is limited so please call ahead to reserve your space; the program is included within the Park’s admission fees: $5.00 per adult (14 and up), $3.00 per youth (7-13), and free for children (0-6). For additional information and reservations, please call (928) 282-6907.

Maestro Andrew Sweeney Sings “The Music of the Night” at the Sedona Village Cabaret!

Enjoy the best dinner theater in Sedona—the Sedona Village Cabaret at Marketplace Café this Tuesday night! Whether he is singing “The Music of the Night” from “Phantom of the Opera,” or performing “All I Ask of You” from the same musical (or faux opera), you will be dazzled by the lyrical brilliance of Maestro Andrew Sweeney. Maestro Andrew Sweeney has spent more than 22 years training for just this moment at the Sedona Village Cabaret. After earning his bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from the esteemed music department at Chapman University in California, Maestro Andrew Sweeney continued his graduate education in Vocal Performance at UCLA where he earned his doctorate (ABD). As a professional opera singer, he sung at the Los Angeles Music Center Opera where he was hired by the world famous tenor, Plácido Domingo. As an operatic tenor, Andrew Sweeney has sung roles in "Amahl and the Night Visitors," "The Barber of Seville," "Billy Budd," "La Boheme," "Carmen," "Die Fledermaus," "Falstaff," "Iolanthe," "Les Mamelles de Tiresias," "Le Pauvre Matelot," "The Rake's Progress," "La Scala di Seta," "Susannah," "La Tabernera del Puerto," "The Tales of Hoffman," "Tosca," and "Turn of the Screw." He sang the title role in Benjamin Britten's "St. Nicholas Cantata" and sang roles in concerts of Carl Orff’s "Carmina Burana" and "Catulli Carmina," Handel’s "Messiah," and Roger Bourland's world premiere of "Rosarium." In 2003, Maestro Andrew was a Regional Finalist in the prestigious National Metropolitan Council Auditions for young opera singers. As a tenor soloist, he earned awards from The National Metropolitan Opera Council, The Wagner Society, The Leni Fe Bland Foundation, and The National Association of Teachers of Singing. To hone his skills, he participated in master classes with renowned teachers such as Horst Gunter, Frans Boerlage, Thomas Hampson, Dawn Upshaw, Martin Katz, and Carol Van Ness. In 2005, Andrew Sweeney became the Artistic Director of Bel Canto Alaska. As voice coach, director, and arranger, he prepared very promising singers to excel as well as directing every step of the production from Day One rehearsals to opening night. With various musical organizations, he has served as the Executive Associate Artistic Director, the Artistic Director, opera conductor, musical director, stage director, artistic director, guest chorus, choral director, oratorio, voice teacher, arranger, and composer. For many years, Maestro Andrew served as the Executive Associate Artistic Director for the Anchorage Opera, one of America’s leading regional opera companies. In February 2009, Maestro Andrew gained national attention after stepping in for the conductor who was ill. Long story short, Andrew Sweeney successfully conducted the opera, The Barber of Seville, won triumphant reviews, and earned the title “Maestro.” In 2010, Maestro Andrew conducted The Power of Love at the Anchorage Opera. In addition, he has served as director for performing groups such as the Bel Canto Singers of Alaska and the Anchorage Concert Chorus. Through his music, Maestro Andrew anticipates adding to Marketplace's well deserved reputation as a restaurant which is creating a “sense of community” that brings locals and visitors together to celebrate life. Mark your calendars! On Saturday, November 29 from 6-9 P.M., Maestro Andrew will perform a benefit dinner theater performance for the UCLA Alumni to raise money for college scholarships for deserving Arizona students. Having benefited from the scholarships he earned while a student at UCLA, this is the Maestro's way of giving back! Event is open to anyone who would like to support college education!

'Documented' Film Premiere

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present its premiere series with the debut of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning and thought-provoking film “Documented”. There will be three shows: Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 and 7 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre. In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in the New York Times Magazine. “Documented” chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his public struggle as an immigration reform advocate; and his journey inward as he reconnects with his mother, whom he hasn't seen in 20 years. A broken immigration system leads to broken families and broken lives. Jose Antonio Vargas began his immigrant journey at age 12, when he was sent to the United States from the Philippines by his mother to live with his grandparents in Mountain View, California. After attending San Francisco State University, Vargas pursued a print journalism career – landing jobs at newspapers in San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C. for the Washington Post – all the while, managing to keep his true citizenship status a secret. In 2008, Vargas was awarded a Pulitzer as part of the team of Washington Post journalists who reported on the 2007 shooting massacre at Virginia Tech University. Vargas began working on “Documented” shortly before “outing” himself as undocumented in a ground-breaking New York Times Magazine essay, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.” He then traveled around America, telling his story in solidarity with the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country. “Against the advice of lawyers, I wrote, in detail, what I had to do to live and survive in America: hide in plain sight as I worked as a journalist for more than a decade; lie on government forms to get jobs while paying taxes and contributing to Social Security (undocumented workers provide billions in both); grow estranged from my mother in the Philippines who put me on a plane to the United States in 1993. In outing myself, I risked everything and prepared myself for anything,” said Vargas. “What I was not prepared for, however, was silence, especially from politicians in Washington, where immigration has become the third rail of American politics, often framed in partisan, polarizing terms, mostly subjected to elections, and tied to the future of political parties.” “To us who are directly affected by the political standstill, immigration is urgent and personal. Immigration is about our families.” “Documented” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 and 7 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information, please call 928-282-1177. An Evening with Armen Ra: Film and Concert Event

Glamorously eccentric and enigmatic Theremin master Armen Ra returns to Sedona for “An Evening with Armen Ra” — special film screenings and live concerts — on the Goldenstein Stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. There will be three performances Sept. 25-27, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival, in partnership with Sedona/Verde Valley Pride. Armen Ra — Theremin virtuoso and star of the documentary “When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra and the Theremin” — returns to Sedona after a sold-out, standing-room only screening and concert at the recent Illuminate Film Festival. Now is your chance to experience the magic that is Armen, his life and his music. Armen Ra is a spellbinding character off stage and when he steps up to play his Theremin. Rivaling Clara Rockmore with style & attitude and as original and uncompromising as Klaus Nomi, “When My Sorrow Died” takes an intimate look at the life of the Iranian-born Armenian, turned concert performer, by way of the New York club scene. It’s a feast for the eyes, visually lush with a rich palette of colors, as well as the ears, with footage from a number of Ra’s concert performances. Armen Ra recounts his dynamic journey in this life-spanning documentary that mixes rare concert performances, candid interviews, and archive material with the magical power of music that can alchemize ancient sorrow into timeless beauty. Born in Tehran to a father who worked for Iran Air, a mother who was a concert pianist (and with an aunt who was an opera singer), Armen was lucky enough to travel the world on frequent vacations when he was a child. A precocious little boy, he delighted in sewing the costumes for his puppet shows and displayed a florid imagination which, as he grew, was applied to crafting his exotic persona. When political unrest in Iran caused his family to relocate to America, Armen was frequently bullied at school. He quickly decided that he had nothing in common with his classmates and soon found his way to New York City, where he began a new chapter of his life. Take the only instrument you play but never touch and put it in the hands of a human who touches every soul they meet. Let Armen Ra transport you to another time and place with his magic and beauty. There will be three presentations of “An Evening with Armen Ra” (featuring screenings of “When My Sorrow Died” and live concert performances) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Sept. 25-27, at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are $15 general admission and $13 for Film Festival members and students. All tickets include a meet-and-greet with Armen Ra in the lobby after the show. The Thursday evening performance will kick off the Sedona/Verde Valley Pride weekend celebration with a special reception in the theatre courtyard before the show. The public is invited to all three performances. Visit www.SedonaFilmFestival.org for tickets and performance information or call 928-282-1177. 5th Annual Hopi All Native Arts & Cultural Festival

This festival is free and for the whole family to enjoy the beauty of Native American art and culture. "Life in the eyes of an artist is unique and reflects the beauty in life and brings out serenity." The Hopi Festival brings to Flagstaff public education by way of art, traditional social dances and traditional foods. This event aims to bring the City of Flagstaff together with surrounding neighbors to learn from one another in unity, happiness and stewardship of the earth for all people of different walks of life. The City of Flagstaff's City Council unanimously approved a street closure of Aspen Avenue between San Francisco and Leroux Streets to again allow for increasing the size of the festival. Our goal is to partner with the City to promote a diversity of arts, culture and educational opportunities through the Hopi Festival at Heritage Square. As the interest in and attendance at the Festival has grown each year, we realized we needed to expand opportunities for additional artisans and presenters of Native American culture to meet the demands of the visitors. Closing the street to expand the Festival's footprint made a lot of sense and we thank the City of Flagstaff and the downtown businesses for their support. This years festival will donate proceeds from the festival to Domestic Violence on Hopi and in Flagstaff. Location of event: E Aspen Ave and N Leroux St -Heritage Square in down town Flagstaff Date of Event: September 27th & 28th, 2014 Start time: 9:00 am each day and ending at 5 pm each day For more information on what will be happening please visit: www.hopiallnativefestival.com "It is exciting to have our downtown businesses be a part of our Festival and hope that our working relationship will only grow stronger," Talayumptewa coordinator said "Each year that I work on putting this Festival together gives me a feeling of satisfaction knowing that I am a part of a rich heritage that I can share with others" This years festival hopes to draw the crowds it did last year and to bring more art and entertainment for a better understanding of life.

'Medea' from the National Theatre of London

The National Theatre of London launches its new season with a production of “Medea”, showing in Sedona on Sunday, Sept. 28. The Sedona International Film Festival hosts the big screen premiere of Euripides’ powerful new drama from stage of the Olivier Theatre in London. There will be one show at 4:00 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Helen McCrory (The Last of the Haussmans) returns to the National Theatre to take the title role of Medea in a new version of Euripides’ play by Ben Power, directed by Carrie Cracknell. Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she has left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear. The cast also includes Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath Whitefield. The production will be designed by Tom Scutt, with lighting by Lucy Carter, choreography by Lucy Guerin and sound design by Gregory Clarke. “Medea” is garnering raves from critics and audiences in London and around the world, including 4- and 5-star reviews from every major publication in England. ‘Extraordinary. Helen McCrory ascends to greatness’ — Sunday Times ‘Thrilling and merciless. Helen McCrory gives the performance of her career’ — Daily Telegraph 'Helen McCrory triumphs. A piercing, painful vision of passion and betrayal’ — Evening Standard 'Carrie Cracknell’s play is a tragic force to be reckoned with’ — Guardian “Medea” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177 or online at www.SedonaFilmFestival.org. Maestro Andrew Sweeney Sings Selections from “Les Misérables” at the Sedona Village Cabaret!

Whether Maestro Andrew Sweeney is singing “Bring Him Home” or playing “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Misérables,” you are in for a great time at the best dinner theater in Sedona, the Sedona Village Cabaret at Marketplace Café this Tuesday night! Add in $4 glasses of wine and a dinner special, and you can get dinner and a show for under $20! It's a great way to celebrate life! The music is exquisite! Maestro Andrew earned his Ph.D. In Vocal Performance from UCLA and that training has finely honed his voice into the exceptional instrument it is today. After the world famous tenor, Plácido Domingo, heard Maestro Andrew sing, he hired him for the Los Angeles Music Center Opera. Maestro Andrew sang in some of the world's most cherished operas such as "La Boheme," "Carmen," "Die Fledermaus," and "Tosca." Now, you can hear sing operatic arias such as “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini's “Turandot” and "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" (“My Heart Opens Itself to Your Voice”) from “Samson et Dalila” by Camille Saint-Saëns. Since Andrew Lloyd Weber based many of his most famous songs on Puccini arias in public domain, you can hear Maestro Andrew sing Puccini' melody and Andrew Lloyd Weber's lyrics on “The Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You” from “Phantom of the Opera.” In between, Maestro Andrew will add in Madonna (“The Power of Good-Bye”), Lady Gaga (“The Edge of Glory”), Three Dog Night (“Joy to the World”), and Gershwin (“Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess”). It's all eclectically Sedona! Dinner is served throughout his three hour performance from 6-9 P.M. Since there is no cover charge, you do not need to purchase tickets. We encourage you to call for reservations (928) 284-5478. Space is filling up fast with Maestro Andrew Sweeney's fantastic fans awaiting the next Sedona Village Cabaret!

Stories in Stone

Navajo stone sculptor Alvin Marshall returns to Rowe Fine Art Gallery for his third annual show on Oct. 3, and while we would love to tell you what he'll debut that evening, it's top secret - even for us. "I'm calling the piece Beyond Tradition," says Alvin. "It was inspired by my trip to Santa Fe Indian Market this year. I'm a traditional guy, but I was surrounded by these young mainstream artists. Us old guys need to come up with ways to keep up with the kids, so that's what this sculpture is about."

In addition to Beyond Tradition, which Alvin reveals is a figurative piece, he will showcase a sampling of his wildlife sculptures. Alvin debuted his wildlife art at Rowe Fine Art Gallery last year, and the response was overwhelming He says Sedona, and especially Rowe Fine Art Gallery, holds a special place in his heart, and he's always happy to return to the red rocks.

"I think art collectors in Sedona are seeking a good spirit, and they find that in me, in my art and in the teachings of the old ways," says Alvin, who studied sculpture with renowned Navajo artist Oreland Joe in the early 1980s after a stint in the U.S. Army.

Stories in Stone is part of the Sedona Gallery Association's 1st Friday Gallery Tour. Alvin will be in the gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 3. Refreshments will be served. Alvin is quite the storyteller, and he enjoys sharing his traditions with art lovers. Don't miss the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with this talented sculptor. For those who want to learn more about sculpting in stone, Alvin will teach a workshop at the Sedona Arts Center on Nov. 11.

Zen Creativity and the Art of Life

“Zen Dude” Alok Hsu Kwang-han and spiritual teacher Raylene Abbott will inspire and guide you to rest in the spaciousness of your being, to become intimate with not-knowing, and to allow your brush—or you—to dance from emptiness! Being playful with not-knowing and putting aside all ideas of how to paint, you might be asked to paint the energy of a partner acting like a wild animal; your heart's desire; the Zen Koan, "My house burned down, I can see the moon!"; Rumi's "God has only four words, 'Come Dance with me!'", or the sound of silence... As we paint and share what we discover in our paintings, we are surprised by the intelligence, good humor and creativity that come to find us. As we deepen into the workshop, we relax and return to our natural state of "resting in presence and moving from emptiness". From here the art of life unfolds.

Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. Our monthly-guided geology walk will be held on October 12th at 1:00 P.M. Join our knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on our trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear.

10th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival

SEDONA PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL pays homage to the spirit and innovation of the great French Impressionists whose paintings were based on the belief that "you should trust your eyes" to capture the beauty that surrounds you. As with the old masters, contemporary plein-air artists paint from life in the out-of-doors (en plein air), capturing moments in time that reflect the ever-changing colors, light and shadows, temperature and shifting elements. Thirty award-winning artists, selected from among the best of the best, have accepted invitations to participate in this showcase. They are coming from all over the United States to spend seven days painting en plein air, and to share their incredible talent and unique experiences with this challenging art form.

Red Rock State Park Watercolor Workshop

Are you interested in learning some basic tricks to watercolor painting? Red Rock State Park will be hosting Cathy Stedman for the first day of a workshop series on the basics of watercolor painting. This will be an introductory to intermediate class. The series will cover the basics to watercolor painting-instruction and techniques with a theme each month; October’s theme will be painting the Red Rock landscape. The second half will be held outdoors with views of the Sedona Red Rock Country and a chance to practice your new skills. Cathy Stedman, a Sedona local, has been teaching watercolor in 1997 when she started a community class. Shortly after retiring in Sedona in 2000, she began teaching watercolor classes at the Sedona Community Center, where she is still currently teaching classes. “Teaching is simply my best learning tool and I hope to bring others along as I learn”, says Stedman. She has taken classes from several well-known artists including Frank Web, John Salminen, and Gretchen Lopez. This workshop will be held on October 18th from 10:00-2:00 P.M. Space is limited to 12 participants, so call ahead to reserve your spot. The workshop reservation fee is $50.00, which includes entry and all supplies. Please bring your own lunch. Dia de Los Muertos Celebration at Tlaquepaque

Join us in the courtyards of Tlaquepaque on Friday, October 31st and Saturday, November 1st, 2014 to make an offering at the Celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Music, food and beautiful altars will be on view starting at 4:30 p.m. - Watch fire dancers and visit our thematic face painting booth. Costumes are encouraged. Ofrenda or Offering, in the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos, is created to remember the dead and to honor ancestors. A special spot in the home is customarily selected to put photographs, flowers, decorations, lit candles and the favorite food and drink of those who have passed away. This act of preparing an altar of offerings to the dead helps transform grief into acceptance. In Arizona, the making of portable Ofrendas to be displayed for exhibition has become a form of contemporary cultural expression. Free to the public.

Sage Women Awakening Conference Sedona

The “Sage Women Awakening” event is an opportunity for today’s modern women to acquire valuable tools and information to assist them through the sometimes “challenging” transition periods in their lives. Based on the ancient principles of Ayurveda, Native American Wisdom and Modern Medicine, popular authorities on the subject will present ways to renegotiate the illusion that tabloids and media have portrayed, resulting in misconceptions of how women view themselves in today’s society. There are large groups of women across the globe who are confused, frustrated and feel like they are left out. Most self-awareness seminars, conferences, workshops and similar events target a generalized group. It’s time to remember the truth and wisdom behind menopausal transformation, so women of today can truly embrace their power and unlimited potential. During Sage Women Awakening, we will gain an understanding of these profound times and move through them together with grace, confidence and vitality.

A Christmas Carol

Sedona's own award-winning actor, playwright and historian, Michael Peach will read Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in front of a fire in the Museum's historic red rock fireplace. Enjoy Peach's rendition of this holiday classic. Not since Dickens himself took to the stage to perform his most famous story, has there been such a command of the characters as Peach presents. Follow this engrossing tale of Ebenezer Scrooge's ghostly journeys through Christmases past, present, and future and his ultimate transformation from a harsh and grasping old miser to a charitable and compassionate human being. A perennial classic that has become as much a part of the holiday season as holly, mistletoe, and evergreen wreaths. A perfect and entertaining reminder of the meaning of the holiday season.
