Day of the Dead and The Marigold Mural Project now in their eighth year, have become two of Tlaquepaque’s most exciting annual events, attracting visitors of all ages to come together to celebrate our ancestors and those who have come before us.
Come join us at Tlaquepaque for mural painting; music by renowned returning artists including guitarist Eric Miller and techno-violinist Teresa Joy, and fabulous new comers, Los Chollas Peligrosas, the all female Latin folk fusion band; traditional foods; and fantastic entertainment by Arizona’s acclaimed Circus Farm jugglers, acrobats, aerial artists, and their not to be missed fire dancers, always an event highlight.
Our celebration starts on October 30 at 11am with the inauguration of the Marigold Mural Project, led again this year by the artist Lovejoy. Visitors are encouraged to paint their tributes on our 26 foot long community remembrance wall. This is an opportunity to remember your loved ones and create something lasting in collaboration with others. Paints and brushes will be provided on site with the murals from the previous years on display for your viewing and inspiration. Mural painting will continue daily on the Calle Independence from 11am to 5pm until the end of our Day of the Dead festivities.
On Nov 3rd at 4pm our spirited Day of the Dead festivities get underway. Tlaquepaque’s patios, streets and fountains will be transformed into traditional Day of the Dead decor and altars—ofrendas. We encourage you to bring flowers, personal objects, photos and candles to leave as an offering on our main public altar located in Patio Del Norte. Candles will also be available for purchase. Enjoy the inspiring music and action-packed entertainment as you walk our grounds to view the altars, dance and celebrate with others.
The wearing of Day of the Dead costumes is strongly recommended for all ages. Activities for kids include free sugar skull making, free face painting in Day-of-the-Dead motifs as well as juggling lessons. "El Mercado” in the Calle Independencia will feature agua frescas and fresh churros, traditional pan de muerto (Day-of-the-Dead bread), Taquitos and hot chocolate. There will be several artisan booths vending Day-of-the-Dead merchandise as well.
