‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay’ Met Live Opera
Next Upcoming Date:
Saturday, January 24 2026
The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is honored to be the home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2025-2026 season, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival. Added due to popular demand, the Met-premiere production of Mason Bates’s “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” arrives in cinemas, recorded live earlier this season. The opera will premiere in Sedona on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m. The exhilarating operatic adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel follows two Jewish cousins who create a comic-book superhero, hoping to recruit America into the fight against Nazism. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the dynamic new production by Tony Award–winning director Bartlett Sher. ACT I Joe Kavalier escapes Prague to live with his cousin Sam Clay in Brooklyn. Together, they create a comic-book superhero to urge Americans to join the fight against the Nazis. Their comic, The Escapist, becomes a hit. Joe meets Rosa, who is raising money for a ship, The Ark of Miriam, to transport children out of Europe. As they discuss arranging passage for Joe’s sister, Sarah, they plan for the future and fall in love. Meanwhile, Sam and the radio actor Tracy Bacon have fallen for each other. When Joe learns that German torpedoes have sunk The Ark of Miriam, he has a breakdown. ACT II Joe’s mental deterioration continues, worsened by the news of his parents’ and sister’s deaths. Rosa finds a makeshift studio Joe has set up, as well as evidence that he has joined the military. Sam attends a going-away party for Tracy, who has also enlisted. The party is an exclusively gay affair, and when it is raided by the FBI, one of the agents sexually assaults Sam. Rosa tells Sam that she’s pregnant. He offers to marry her and raise the child as his own. On a battlefield in Europe, Joe finds Tracy. After Tracy is killed, Joe starts reading Rosa’s letters. One contains Rosa’s drawing of Luna Moth, who appears and guides Joe to the house where Rosa and Sam live. Sam boards a train and begins writing “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay”. The 2025-2026 Met Live Opera season in Sedona is generously sponsored by Chris Fladlien. The Met Live Opera’s “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 general admission, $22 for Film Festival members, and $15 for students.
