Andrea Chénier: Met Live Opera

Date: Saturday, December 13 2025 to Wednesday, December 17 2025

The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is honored to be the home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2025-2026 season, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival. The season continues with Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” live via simulcast on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. and the encore presentation on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. Plan to come early as John Steinbrunner will lead a pre-opera talk one hour before the LIVE production on Saturday. Giordano’s passionate tragedy stars tenor Piotr Beczala as the virtuous poet who falls victim to the intrigue and violence of the French Revolution. Following their celebrated recent partnership in Giordano’s “Fedora” in the 2022–23 Live in HD season, Beczala reunites with soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Chénier’s aristocratic lover, Maddalena di Coigny, with baritone Igor Golovatenko as Carlo Gérard, the agent of the Reign of Terror who seals their fates. Met Principal Guest Conductor Daniele Rustioni takes the podium to lead Nicolas Joël’s gripping staging. ACT I Paris, 1789. At a party at the Countess di Coigny’s home, news of the growing Revolution is discussed. The Countess’s daughter, Maddalena, asks the writer Andrea Chénier to improvise a poem. His paean to nature turns into an appeal against tyranny. The servant Gérard, who is secretly in love with Maddalena, declares his disgust with the ways of the aristocracy and departs. ACT II 1794. The Reign of Terror is in full force. Chénier has received anonymous letters from a woman and hopes to find the love he never experienced. The writer turns out to be Maddalena, who begs for Chénier’s protection. He promises to help her, and they declare their love. Gérard, now a leader of the Revolution, has been looking for Maddalena. When Chénier wounds him in a fight, Gérard lets his rival get away, asking him to protect Maddalena. ACT III Chénier has been arrested. When Gérard confesses his love to Maddalena, she offers herself to him to save Chénier. Touched by her devotion, Gérard promises to try and rescue him. Even though he admits to the Revolutionary Tribunal that his accusations against the poet were false, Chénier is sentenced to death. ACT IV At the St. Lazare prison, Maddalena bribes the jailer to let her join Chénier in death. The lovers share a final moment before being taken to the guillotine. The 2025-2026 Met Live Opera season in Sedona is generously sponsored by Chris Fladlien. The Met Live Opera’s “Andrea Chénier” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. The pre-opera talk will take place one hour before the live Saturday simulcast.
